8-WEEK BEGINNERS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU COURSE – PRESTON & SOUTH RIBBLE
YOUR FIRST STEP INTO GRAPPLING STARTS HERE.
Here at The Grappling Society, we know that starting a new sport—especially a combat sport like Brazilian jiu-jitsu—can be intimidating. That’s why we’ve created a beginners’ course that’s different: structured, supportive, and built around concepts rather than just techniques.
Instead of overwhelming you with a long list of moves, we focus on the key principles and transferable skills that actually matter. Our goal is to help you build confidence, reactions, and the habits that make jiu-jitsu enjoyable—not just survivable.
You’ll follow a thoughtfully designed syllabus that introduces the problem-solving nature of BJJ from day one, so you can develop a solid foundation and transition smoothly into regular classes feeling confident, capable, and ready to grow.

FAQS
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
Complete beginners welcome. No experience needed. No fitness level required.
This course is for anyone looking to start their Brazilian jiu-jitsu journey on the right foot—whether you’ve never set foot on the mats before, or you’ve tried it once or twice but didn’t stick with it. You’ll be learning alongside others at the same stage, in a welcoming and supportive environment, so you can test what you’re learning on an even playing field and build the confidence to join all-levels classes without the nerves.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?
Not much! We’ll provide you with a Gi (the pyjama looking outfit worn for many martial arts) and a white belt, so you don’t need to worry about buying kit upfront. Just wear comfortable sports kit (something without zips or pockets is ideal) bring a pair of flip flops or slides to wear off the mats, and a drink to stay hydrated. Most importantly, come with a can-do attitude and a willingness to try something new. We’ll take care of the rest.
WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE DIFFERENT?
Most beginner courses focus on memorising long lists of techniques through passive drilling alone. Ours doesn’t. Instead, we teach through concepts and principles—bigger-picture ideas that help you understand why things work, not just how. That means less overwhelm, better retention, and quicker progress.
You’ll also experience live training in a way that’s safe, beginner-appropriate, and rooted in problem-solving from the start. We use game-based drills and situational sparring to help you learn about common positions and submissions, build reactions, and real-time decision-making from day one.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Our course is built around four core pillars of grappling: passing, wrestling, back control, and guard work. You’ll explore each of these through live, beginner-friendly scenarios using constraint-based drills designed to guide your decision-making without overwhelming you.
We’ll break down key positions and submissions as they come up naturally, so by the end of the course, you’ll have a well-rounded understanding of the sport and no glaring holes in your game. In keeping with our wider coaching philosophy, all sessions are collaborative in nature and include group discussions to help you reflect on what worked or what didn't, ask questions, and start using those light bulb moments to build your own unique style.
I CAN'T MAKE ALL THE SESSIONS, IS THAT OK?
We get that life happens, and it’s totally fine to miss the odd session here and there. That said, the course is designed to build week by week—so if you know you’ll be away for a big chunk of it, we recommend you wait for a future date. We run this course several times a year, so there’ll be another one soon.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE COURSE?
Once you’ve completed the 8 weeks, you’ll be ready to join our all-levels classes, so if you've fallen in love with BJJ and want to continue (spoiler: you will), you're all set. You’ll already know the key concepts, the layout of the gym, and a bunch of friendly faces—so there’s no big jump or awkward transition.
I’M A BIT NERVOUS—IS THAT NORMAL?
Completely. Starting anything new can be nerve-wracking, especially a combat sport. But we’ve created this course specifically to take the edge off. You’ll be learning with other beginners, at your own pace, with coaches who have been exactly where you are and genuinely want to help. We even have a dedicated group chat so you can meet the other students before you start! Don't worry, we’ve got you.
