BEGINNERS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU CLASSES IN PRESTON & SOUTH RIBBLE
YOUR FIRST STEP INTO GRAPPLING STARTS HERE.
Here at The Grappling Society, we know that starting a new sport—especially a combat sport like Brazilian jiu-jitsu—can be intimidating. That’s why we’ve created beginners’ classes that are different: structured, supportive, and built around concepts rather than just techniques.
Instead of overwhelming you with a long list of moves, we focus on the key principles and transferable skills that actually matter. Our goal is to help you build confidence, reactions, and the habits that make jiu-jitsu enjoyable—not just survivable.
In our foundation classes you’ll follow a thoughtfully designed syllabus that introduces the problem-solving nature of BJJ from day one, so you can develop a solid foundation and transition smoothly into regular classes feeling confident, capable, and ready to grow.

GOODBYE BEGINNERS COURSE, HELLO FOUNDATION CLASSES

OUR BEGINNERS COURSE WAS SUCH A HIT, WE'VE MADE IT PERMANENT.
We’ve taken everything that made the course work — the structure, the support, the concept-based coaching — and built it into two dedicated Foundation classes each week. Designed specifically for newcomers, these sessions are now a staple on our timetable.
And the best bit? We’re keeping the original offer alive.
START STRONG WITH OUR INTRO TO BJJ OFFER

FAQS
WHO IS THIS OFFER FOR?
This course is for anyone looking to start their Brazilian jiu-jitsu journey on the right foot—whether you’ve never set foot on the mats before, or you’ve tried it once or twice but didn’t stick with it. You’ll be learning alongside others at the same stage, in a welcoming and supportive environment, so you can test what you’re learning on an even playing field and build the confidence to join in the rest of our classes without the nerves.
Complete beginners welcome. No experience needed. No fitness level required.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?
Not much! One of our foundation classes is in the Gi (the pyjama-looking outfit worn for many martial arts). We'll lend you one for your first session completely free, and after that, you can continue to hire one for just £2.50 per session- or grab your own brand new Gi from us for £50 when you sign up for the intro offer. Just wear comfortable sports kit (ideally with no zips or pockets), bring a pair of flip flops or slides to wear off the mats, and a drink to stay hydrated. Most importantly, come with a can-do attitude and a willingness to try something new. We’ll take care of the rest.
WHAT MAKES FOUNDATION CLASSES AT TGS DIFFERENT?
Most beginner classes focus on memorising long lists of techniques through passive drilling alone. Ours don't. Instead, we teach through concepts and principles—bigger-picture ideas that help you understand why things work, not just how. That means less overwhelm, better retention, and quicker progress.
You’ll also experience live training in a way that’s safe, beginner-appropriate, and rooted in problem-solving from the start. We use game-based drills and situational sparring to help you learn about common positions and submissions, build reactions, and real-time decision-making from day one.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Our entire syllabus is built around four core pillars of grappling: passing, wrestling, back control, and guard work. You’ll explore each of these through live, beginner-friendly scenarios using constraint-based drills designed to guide your decision-making without overwhelming you.
We’ll break down key positions and submissions as they come up naturally, so by the end of the course, you’ll have a well-rounded understanding of the sport and no glaring holes in your game. In keeping with our wider coaching philosophy, all sessions are collaborative in nature and include group discussions to help you reflect on what worked or what didn't, ask questions, and start using those light bulb moments to build your own unique style.
I CAN'T MAKE ALL THE FOUNDATION SESSIONS, IS THAT OK?
No problem- you’ll still get the full experience. The intro offer gives you unlimited access to all of our classes for 8 weeks, so you can train as much as you like. While we recommend making it to as many Foundation sessions as possible (they’re designed specifically for beginners), our All Levels classes are open to you too. They go a little deeper into concepts, but you’ll still benefit loads by jumping in, especially if you’re keen to learn fast.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE 8 WEEKS?
By the end of your intro offer, chances are you’ll be hooked (don't say we didn’t warn you). If you’re ready to make it official, you can roll straight into one of our flexible membership plans. Not quite training regularly yet? No problem—you can keep coming on a pay-per-session basis with our drop-in rate.
I’M A BIT NERVOUS—IS THAT NORMAL?
Completely. Starting anything new can be nerve-wracking, especially a combat sport. But we’ve added these classes to our timetable specifically to take the edge off. You’ll be learning with other beginners, at your own pace, with coaches who have been exactly where you are and genuinely want to help. We even have a dedicated beginners group chat so you can meet our other students before you start! Don't worry, we’ve got you.
